Immigrants of Toronto

Immigrants of Toronto

In this episode, Oscar Cecena from Immigrants of Toronto chats with Farhan and me. Originally from India, we met in Dubai and decided to move to Canada. But before establishing in Toronto, we took a fantastic road trip across the country. In this podcast, we share our journey of immigration, the adventures across Canada and the misadventure of returning to Toronto at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also had the honour of being the first couple on the podcast.

A little about us: Gunjan and Farhan Kafil

Farhan and I are curious explorers, outdoors enthusiasts and spirited overlanders. I am a communications pro and he is a contracts manager.

I grew up in Mumbai and spent summer holidays in a small Himalayan town where hikes with cousins cultivated a love for the mountains. Since then, I have climbed two of the “Seven Summits” and mountains in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Farhan is a small-town boy excited by this extraordinary world. He likes to tinker with ideas, plan the next adventure or simply, lace up and run. He is a marathoner, hiker and co-founder of an off-road adventure club.

We met on a road trip in Dubai and, the rest is history – or rather, geography. Together, we climbed mountains, descended into the Grand Canyon, walked on icefields and to the rims of active volcanoes, slept by glaciers and witnessed the aurora borealis. Several adventures later, we moved to Canada in 2019.

As new Canadians, we spent five months RVing in the great outdoors of North America – a journey of 22,000 kms from Toronto to Tuktoyatuk in NWT, Alaska and mainland USA. Together, we explored the country, its culture and communities to learn first-hand what it means to be a Canadian.

Notion for Marketing

Digitally curious, I am always looking out for new tech solutions to make life easier as a communicator. Technology has enabled a fascinating universe of no-code marketing – offering a wide range of tech solutions for low coders like me.

One such phenomenal solution is Notion – a lego-like building block to create workspace that fits around our way of thinking, visualizing and working.

Recently, I did an introduction to Notion for a bunch of great marketers at MarketingNoCode. We explored how marketeers can use Notion to
– Keep on top of clients and projects

– Manage schedules and task

– Organize operations and access templates and much more…

Public Speaking and Communications

I spent the lunch hour sharing some learnings in Public Speaking and Communications gathered over 13-year career in Public Relations.

I joined my fellow mentees at Like Minded Females Network to discuss personal branding, self advocacy and networking within the workplace in an on-going journey of growth and career progression.

Organize your life with Notion App

Organize your life with Notion App

I conducted a workshop with General Assembly Toronto on how to organize our life with Notion app – an all-in-one workspace. It provides components such as databases, kanban boards, wikis, calendars and reminders. You can connect these components to create your own systems for knowledge management, note taking, data management, project management, among others. These components and systems can be used individually, or in collaboration with others.

This workshop was designed to help those who would like to simplify their personal productivity system within a single platform. This particular workshop was focussed on Notion for personal use:

  • Take the stress out of job search
  • Stay on top of courses and admissions
  • Keep a track of networking efforts
  • Manage personal goals
  • Prioritize the week
