Immigrants of Toronto

May 18, 2021 | New Canadian

In this episode, Oscar Cecena from Immigrants of Toronto chats with Farhan and me. Originally from India, we met in Dubai and decided to move to Canada. But before establishing in Toronto, we took a fantastic road trip across the country. In this podcast, we share our journey of immigration, the adventures across Canada and the misadventure of returning to Toronto at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also had the honour of being the first couple on the podcast.

A little about us: Gunjan and Farhan Kafil

Farhan and I are curious explorers, outdoors enthusiasts and spirited overlanders. I am a communications pro and he is a contracts manager.

I grew up in Mumbai and spent summer holidays in a small Himalayan town where hikes with cousins cultivated a love for the mountains. Since then, I have climbed two of the “Seven Summits” and mountains in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Farhan is a small-town boy excited by this extraordinary world. He likes to tinker with ideas, plan the next adventure or simply, lace up and run. He is a marathoner, hiker and co-founder of an off-road adventure club.

We met on a road trip in Dubai and, the rest is history – or rather, geography. Together, we climbed mountains, descended into the Grand Canyon, walked on icefields and to the rims of active volcanoes, slept by glaciers and witnessed the aurora borealis. Several adventures later, we moved to Canada in 2019.

As new Canadians, we spent five months RVing in the great outdoors of North America – a journey of 22,000 kms from Toronto to Tuktoyatuk in NWT, Alaska and mainland USA. Together, we explored the country, its culture and communities to learn first-hand what it means to be a Canadian.
